Cultural Appropriation/Stereotypes

CULTURAL APPROPRIATION

Cultural appropriation is defined as the unauthorized taking of another culture’s dance, dress, music, language, folklore, cuisine, traditional medicine, religious symbols, etc. especially by those who represent a group in a more powerful political position. Examples of inappropriate cultural appropriation include using Native Americans as mascots, as in the Washington Redskins football team, dressing up as a Native American for Halloween, and wearing a Native American headdress at a festival, the media’s and Hollywood’s depiction of Native People, and the honoring of those that committed horrendous crimes against Native People, such as the Columbus Day holiday and statues honoring him.
